Life at AEMO isn’t always about operating Australia’s gas and electricity markets.

In early July, a team from AEMO swapped their regular office attire for steel-capped boots and high visibility vests to help support struggling Victorian families. The team spent a day working with Foodbank – Australia’s largest food relief organisation – and helped pack 9,367 kilograms of food orders, which is about 16,860 meals in total. The food packed is enough to feed an average-sized Australian family, three meals a day, for almost four years!

This volunteering opportunity is part of AEMO’s Healthy Communities program, an initiative that focusses on sustainability and corporate social responsibility, and provides employees with avenues to make a positive impact on the world we live in. Eligible AEMO employees are entitled to four paid leave days each year to take part in community or volunteering activities. Last year’s Healthy Communities program delivered a total of 667 volunteer hours, a 60 percent increase from the year prior.

“With a care for others at heart, it was great to see the team come together to support struggling families in our community,” said Jessica Bacon, AEMO’s senior advisor on workplace health, safety and environment.

“Not only was it a great chance to help those in need, but it was also a good opportunity for team building,” she said.

AEMO is also supporting Team Foodbank in the upcoming Run Melbourne 2018 on Sunday 29 July 2018. Every $1 donated enables Foodbank Victoria to distribute $8 worth of food to those who need it.
